ERIN - A $2,000 damage deposit will now be required with building permits to cover possible damage to town property during construction projects.

Erin council endorsed the deposit system, which is used by some other municipalities, in a new bylaw at its March 5 meeting.

Chief building official Paul Evans said town property was damaged twice by heavy equipment in recent years. A sidewalk was damaged in one case, and parkland in the other.

A $2,000 money order or certified cheque will now be collected with building permit application fees.

It will be returned, minus a $100 inspection fee, once the job is completed with no damage to public property.
