ABOYNE – Steel drums will ring out at Wellington County Museum and Archives on Feb. 16 during a special event in celebration of Black History Month.

“This vibrant celebration of Black history and culture promises an afternoon of captivating performances and engaging activities,” stated a news release from the county and the Centre Wellington Black committee.

The committee and the county museum have partnered to host the event, which takes place from 1 to 3pm. Headlining will be Acoustic Steel, a five-member steel pan band “that brings the soulful island sounds of the Caribbean to life,” the release stated.

For more than 12 years, the band has delighted audiences at various functions and festivals throughout the community, it stated.

Members include Carol Taylor on tenor pan, Cheryl Dietrich on double seconds, Murcheson Callender on guitar pans, Rob Hartung on cello pans, Sam Olgovie on electric bass guitar, and Safo Taylor Asumang on djembe.

With some “interactive singing” promised, including beloved Caribbean children’s songs, the audience is invited to join in the celebration.

“Attendees can look forward to an enriching experience filled with music, history and community spirit,” the release stated.

The event is part of the Centre Wellington Black committee’s commitment to honouring and showcasing the cultural heritage and contributions of the Black community.
