Advertiser, Community News receive OCNA awards
WELLINGTON COUNTY – The Wellington Advertiser earned ten awards in the Ontario Community Newspaper Association’s Better Newspapers competition.
The Advertiser earned first place in six categories, and two in second and third.
First place awards include:
Diversity coverage by Joanne Shuttleworth and Robin George;
Original ad idea by Alicia Roza;
Best creative ad by Emily Hughes;
Best news photo by Jessica Lovell;
Best police/court story by Jordan Snobelen; and
Best police/court series by Jordan Snobelen.
The paper earned second place in best news story circulation over 8,000 by Robin George and best editorial page/section by Dave Adsett, Kelly Waterhouse and Steve Nease.
The Advertiser claimed third place in best feature/unit pages for a volunteer appreciation week section and best use of colour by Emily Hughes.
“Once again, our staff members have been honoured for valuable community journalism,” Advertiser publisher Dave Adsett stated.
“From top notch design, to important community reporting, we employ some of the best in the province.”
In Ontario, there are 138 title members of the Ontario Community Newspaper Association.
“The publishers of those newspapers provide opportunities for journalists and graphic designers to practice their craft. I am thrilled to see those efforts recognized by peers and judges across Ontario,” he stated.
Community News awards
The North Wellington Community News, the Advertiser’s sister publication, earned four awards this year.
The newspaper placed first overall in best editorial circulation over 8,000, for Chris Daponte’s Time to drop the ‘neutrality’ act editorial.
The Community News also won first place for best feature/unit pages award.
The feature showcased the Drayton Farm Show and all it has to offer.
Second place was earned for in house promotion by Alicia Roza and third in special section for the paper’s Remembrance Day pages.
Alicia Roza also earned an honourable mention for the best use of colour.
