Alzheimer Society receives donation from Fergus Highland Rugby Club
FERGUS — The Highland Old Guys (HOGs) of the Fergus Highland Rugby Club recently donated $1,000 to the Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington.
The funds, raised during the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, will benefit dementia-friendly programs and services throughout Wellington County and Waterloo Region.
With the number of Canadians living with dementia expected to surpass 1 million by 2030, officials say community support like this is critical.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Fergus Highland Rugby Club for their generous contribution,” said Michelle Martin, executive director of the Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington.
“As a local Fergusite, this show of support from a local team exemplifies the caring attitude of our community.”
All funds raised stay within the community for practical and free programs and services.
The Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington is the region’s leading charity for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. It provides information, programs and services to those living with a diagnosis and their caregivers.
The Alzheimer Society is reliant on community funding to support about 60 percent of its budget, making the contribution from the rugby club significant.
“So many people are living with dementia in our community that we felt that it was necessary to support the Alzheimer Society to help keep their programs and services free and accessible for our friends and neighbours,” said HOGs leader Bill Eady.
