Cherry trees thrive at Fergus Sportsplex
FERGUS – Food Forest Centre Wellington harvested its first crop on July 3. From left, Wendy Jamison, Carole Pines and Kate Anderson get down to business.

FERGUS - Cherries were bursting from the trees in the forest, next to the tennis courts at the Fergus Sportsplex. Volunteers gathered 9 kilograms (19.5 pounds) of cherries, which will be donated to the Centre Wellington Mobile Market, a food rescue organization that prepares and delivers meals to those in need in the community.  The goals of the food forest are to provide food for the community, while benefiting the environment by increasing native plant diversity and creating a beautiful space for people to gather and volunteer. Watch their Facebook page (Food Forest Centre Wellington) for updates on more fruits, veggies, and herbs to be harvested and made available over the summer.
