Classmates don capes in support of children’s hospital campaign
Caped kids – Drayton Heights Public School Grade 4 sported red capes in recognition of a Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital fundraiser known as Capes for Kids. DRAYTON – A special event called Capes for Kids, a fundraising effort from Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, was celebrated at Drayton Heights Public School on March 8.

“Every year, one of my students, Carson Deckert, takes part in their fundraiser.  When he reaches his goal, he wears his cape for the week,” stated Grade 4 teacher Luanne Noble.

The year, Carson is one of the hospital’s ambassadors and part the annual Capes for Kids campaign on its website and social media.  He has also been featured in some of the campaign videos as well.

Noble said Carson asked the hospital if he could get capes for his entire class and they came through with a set.

Carson has spastic diplegia cerebral palsy (CP), which affects his leg mobility and means he occasionally uses mobility devices. A few years ago he spent three months at Holland Bloorview after a surgery meant to help make movements easier and less painful.

A post on the hospital’s website describes Carson as “the epitome of a budding athlete.

“When he’s not cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays, you’ll often find Carson playing baseball, soccer, or sledge hockey. And, when he’s not wearing all his gear, you can also find him enjoying the great outdoors, camping with his family.”
