Closed meeting investigator re-appointed

ERIN – Erin’s closed meeting investigator has been re-appointed by town council for a four-year term.

John Maddox will continue in the role, which he performs for Wellington County and several local municipalities.

The county pays him an annual retainer of $1,000, plus $300 for each municipality. He is also paid an hourly fee of $150 for any cases that warrant investigation.

Council meetings are normally open to the public, but there are exemptions that allow for closed sessions.

The Municipal Act allows any person to request an investigation if they believe a closed session has been improperly held.

“The appointment of a closed meeting investigator is beneficial to the town and the public as it allows for municipal expertise, consistent quality, and expedient and impartial investigation processes,” said deputy clerk Lisa Campion on Feb. 5.

“It assists council to demonstrate its commitment to accountability and transparency in managing municipal affairs. Additionally, with each investigation, there is opportunity for continuing education in these matters to ensure that members remain well-informed, and act accordingly under legislation.”
