Construction begins at Guelph General Hospital community-based medical center

GUELPH – Guelph General Hospital (GGH) has begun construction on a new community-based medical centre at the Guelph campus of Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning. The centre is scheduled to open in early 2026.

The first phase of the project will include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), breast imaging, ultrasound, x-ray, and bone mineral density testing available at the centre. Later phases of the project will expand services to include outpatient procedures such as endoscopy and orthopedic fracture clinic.

“We anticipate being able to significantly expand our diagnostic imaging services as part of the first phase of this project. This means patients and families will not have to travel outside of our community to get the care they need, when they need it,” said Dr. Samir Patel, radiologist project lead at GGH.

The new centre will be designed and built in partnership with Western Medical Canada Inc., a Canadian firm specializing in health care construction. The Foundation of GGH is actively raising funds to support construction and equipment costs, and to date is more than 80 per cent of the way to their phase one fundraising goal. This includes a landmark $5 million grant from The Angel Gabriel Foundation to expand access to care and launch the fundraising efforts.

“How patients and their families will experience care is a large part of what the project team is preparing for. It is important to us that the perspective of those we serve is rooted in our planning and we are grateful to have members from our Patient and Family Advisory Council help us navigate that,” said Gavin Webb, vice president, finance and chief information officer at GGH.
