WELLINGTON COUNTY – The County of Wellington’s engineering services department, which includes roads and solid waste services, celebrated the National Public Works Week May 18 to 24.

This year’s theme was “People, Purpose, Presence,” honouring the dedication, mission and impact of public works professionals in communities across Canada, officials say.

Throughout last week, county staff engaged in a variety of events aimed at building public awareness, educating residents and celebrating the services delivered by the engineering services department.

Highlights from the week included:

Children from Willowdale Child Care and Learning Centre hang from the top of a loader bucket while wearing high-visibility “Safe Work” vests

– an adopt-a-road roadside cleanup;

– pollinator garden tour;

– Arthur garage grand opening;

– community talks at Elora and Hillsburgh libraries; and

  • touch-a-truck event.

“National Public Works Week is an opportunity to highlight the often behind-the-scenes work that our staff provide to the people of Wellington County,” said county engineer Don Kudo.

“From maintaining safe roads to managing waste responsibly, our teams bring purpose and presence to their work every single day. “I’m proud of our team and the lasting impact they have on our communities.”

Solid waste services manager Das Soligo talks to a group of grade 5 students in the pollinator garden.
