The speed limit in the Shand area of Wellington Road 18, northeast of Fergus, has been lowered from 80 to 70km/h.

Wellington County council approved the speed limit change at its Nov. 26 meeting after receiving a petition from area residents citing numerous collisions, reports of pets killed and danger to local children.  The petition actually requested the speed limit be lowered to 60km/h.

In response to the petition, county engineer Gord Ough explained a review of the speed limit on Wellington Road 18 outside Fergus was carried out using the Canadian Guidelines for Establishing Posted Speed Limits as published by the Transportation Association of Canada

“Based on the results ... the 80km/h speed limit  ... between (Wellington Road 29) and the Third Line, the Belwood Lake Conservation area entrance, should be lowered to 70km/h,” Ough stated in his report.

Council authorized lowering the posted speed limit on Wellington Road 18, from Wellington Road 29 to the Third Line, to 70km/h. New signs were posted last week.
