ROCKWOOD – The annual Warden’s Tree Planting event took place at Valentino Park in Rockwood on Sept. 23. County staff, councillors and volunteers joined together in the morning to plant 850 trees. The trees are funded by the county’s Green Legacy Program, which grows about 160,000 trees a year, and over 3.3 million since the program’s inception in 2004. Species like cucumber magnolia, sycamore, tulip trees, Kentucky coffee trees, Ohio buckeye and red oak trees were planted during the event. Certain areas were left bare to create an accessible trail for locals to enjoy when the forest is in full bloom. The trees cost roughly $25 each. On Oct. 1, county residents will be able to order free Green Legacy trees for their properties.
