County, town investigating sinkhole on Main Street in Erin
ERIN – A sinkhole on Main Street in Erin caused lane restrictions on Tuesday and Wednesday, as county and town road staff worked to repair the road.
The hole, located near the Tin Roof Cafe on Main Street (Wellington Road 124), developed on the evening of Feb. 4.
No injuries were reported and the cause was still being investigated the following afternoon.
“Our efforts have been to secure the site and make sure it’s safe for residents and then to address the issue, fix the sinkhole and restore service,” town director of infrastructure Brian Kavanagh told the Advertiser on Feb. 5.
“After we handle those priorities we’ll regroup and consider what the cause was.”
He added the sinkhole is roughly 10 feet across, but he was unsure of the depth at the time of the interview.
Asked about damages and costs Kavanagh replied, “I don’t have that yet.
"I would likely reply on the county to comment on that as they’ve been mobilizing resources.”
He noted the road is under county jurisdiction and town staff are simply assisting at the scene.
An Advertiser photographer on scene noted the repair work, with the exception of asphalt, seemed to be wrapped up by about 2pm on Feb. 5.
