MAPLETON – Tim Schwartzentruber has been appointed deputy chief building official for the township.

Council approved a motion directing staff to prepare a bylaw appointing him to the position at the April 11 meeting.

Swartzentruber initially joined Mapleton staff as building inspector, following passage of an appointment bylaw at the Feb. 28 council meeting.

A report to council from Mapleton CAO Manny Baron said Swartzentruber “has brought extensive experience and exceptional customer service to our team.

“Together with Dan Sharina, our current CBO, they have improved the department’s efficiency and service, meeting the expectations of our builders. By appointing Tim as the deputy, he will be able to sign almost all permits, which will further enhance the department’s efficiency and benefit our builders,” the report states.

“So we’re back to where we were a little bit ago, before we had troubles finding some building officials,” said Baron.

His report noted the township has struggled in recent years to find qualified building officials.

“This issue is not unique to our township, but rather a province-wide problem,” the report states.

Sharina was appointed chief building official for Mapleton in July of 2022. The CBO position is shared with Guelph/Eramosa under an agreement between the two municipalities.

Baron told council appointing Swartzentruber to the deputy position will allow the township to reduce reliance on RSM Building Consultants for building department services and “we can absorb those charges from within by making him the deputy CBO.”
