Thomson was recognized during an OMAA awards event Feb. 25 with a special OMAA achievement award for his involvement in a “collaborative response to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“This has been a particularly challenging time for the municipal sector and chief administrative officers in Ontario. It is a delight to congratulate Derrick for his commitment to excellence in municipal management,” states a letter from OMAA president Gayle Jackson received by Minto council during the March 16 meeting.

“Well done Derrick … I know you’ve been involved in the association for many years,” said Mayor George Bridge.

Thomson said he is “super humbled to receive this recognition. It was a group effort by a lot of folks especially the county CAOs … Listen if I could say one thing, it pales in comparison to really our heroes which are our frontline health care workers, they really deserve all the recognition in the world; and also really public health, under he leadership of Dr. (Nicola) Mercer. They’re really the heroes. They are really the ones that deserve all our recognition.”
