ELORA – Centre Wellington firefighters responded to a call on Christmas Day for a dog that fell into the Elora Gorge, but unfortunately the dog did not survive.

Deputy fire chief Jonathan Karn said the call came in at around 1:40pm on Dec. 25.

“Unfortunately, it was a recovery and not a rescue,” Karn told the Advertiser.

“The dog was off its leash and fell about 70 feet. The family was on a trail, so they weren’t anywhere they weren’t supposed to be.

“The dog’s owner said it liked to swim, so once the dog heard the sound of the water it wanted to get to the water.”

Karn said 20 firefighters were on the scene for about an hour and a half.

They were able to retrieve the dog’s body for the family.
