DRAYTON – The Drayton Fairgrounds will be jam-packed June 27 to 29 with activities for the whole family, paying homage to both the village and the country.

“I’m suggesting there’s not a bigger Canada Day celebration in the province that is lasting three days,” Drayton 150 volunteer committee coordinator Ab Hesselink told the Advertiser.

As this year marks Drayton’s 150th anniversary, the committee decided to pull two celebrations together as one.

Events take place in various locations, including the agricultural society building, PMD Arena, fairgrounds and on Wood Street for the Rotary Club’s Soapbox Derby.

“There have been people that have really stepped up and it should all go off without a hitch,” said Hesselink.

One of the bigger events is the car show, with around 400 cars expected, depending on the weather. If rain is in the forecast on Saturday, the show will be moved to Sunday.

Hesselink noted the entire event has been made affordable and accessible for everyone.

“The generosity of our community has been overwhelming,” he said.

There is no admission fee to participate in the car show or activities.

Canada Day flags will be seen flowing during the opening ceremony on June 27 at 6pm on the main stage at the ballpark.

Flags will also be flying throughout the Drayton 150 celebration parade on June 28 at 2pm. Floats will begin at Main Street and continue to the fairgrounds.

Asked if the fireworks will be a big show, Hesselink stated, “It always is. It’s one of the largest ones in the area every year and this year will be no different.

“It might even be larger than usual.”

Camping accommodations will also be available for those interested.

“Our welcome mat is out, the town’s all decorated with our celebration colours and we’re just hoping for a large turn out,” said Hesselink.
