GUELPH – The Guelph Humane Society has 11 of 105 cats surrendered last month ready for adoption.

Louise Frost, manager of marketing and communications, said in a phone interview that most of the cats that were taken to the humane society were in fair health and have been vaccinated and microchipped, spayed or neutered and have received parasite control.

Some require more extensive care, and some are staying with foster families and they, too will be available for adoption in the future.

But the first 11 cats are healthy, happy and eager to find a forever home right now, officials say.

“Our goal is to ensure the cats find loving homes that they can thrive in,” stated associate director Lisa Veit in a press release.

“They have come from a challenging living environment and we want to ensure they adjust to their new homes and loving families as smoothly as possible.”

The cats were surrendered by the owner on Jan. 22 and early reports placed the number at 80.

“As we started working with the cats, we realized there were 105,” Frost said.

“It is a big number and very unusual for us.”

News of the cats spread near and far and the humane society has been overwhelmed with donations and support from Guelph, Wellington County and as far away as the United States.

Anyone interested in adopting must follow the usual adoption process: apply online, meet with an adoption coordinator and, once approved, take the cat home.
