Erin celebrates completion of Canada 150 tree planting

A ceremony to mark the planting of the final two trees of 150 trees and shrubs planted to honour Canada’s 150th year was held at Riverside Park here on May 13.

The planting was coordinated by the Erin Trails Committee and the Credit Valley Conservation Authority and accomplished with the aid of local volunteers.

Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott expressed his appreciation to organizers of the planting, noting the effort fits in with his own initiative to see the province plant millions of trees during the sesquicentennial year.

The initiative was inspired by Wellington County’s Green Legacy program.

“You’ve done the same thing here with 150 trees … Congratulations on the great work you’re doing here,” said Arnott.

Noting the County of Wellington has planted over two million trees since Green Legacy was launched during the county’s 150th year, Warden Dennis Lever offered congratulations to the committee and volunteers.

“It’s a great day in Erin,” said Lever.

Mayor Allan Alls noted the final trees were planted in a location set to be the beginning of the Riverwalk Trail in the village.

“This is going to be a landmark position to start this trail system,” stated Alls.
