Tribute - Erin Legion Branch 442 held a ceremony at McMillan Park on June 6 to commemorate the launch of the D-Day invasion 75 years ago.

The event included participation by Mayor Allan Alls and councillors, air cadets from the 242 Ross Ferguson squadron and local guides.

Legion chaplain Irene Walback said, “I really want the children to remember, we are not here to glorify war. We are here to recognize its cost, and to commit ourselves to be peacemakers, wherever that opportunity falls within our grasp. We especially recall the efforts undertaken at Juno Beach by the Canadian forces. We stand with pride. We stand with awe of their bravery, their fortitude as they strove to liberate France.”

Service officer Doug Kirkwood paid tribute to (at right) Rifleman Douglas Reed, 26, and his brother L-Cpl. Gordon Reed, 21, of the Queen’s Own Rifles. The family had lived on the 5th Line of Erin Township. The brothers died on Juno Beach and are buried at Beny-sur-Mer cemetery.
