Events planned for sexual assault prevention month

GUELPH - Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis is running free virtual events for the month of May in recognition of sexual assault prevention month.

The events are focused on “engaging the community in important conversations and actions for change,” states a press release from Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis.

Jensen Williams, public educator for the agency, explained the idea behind these events is to emphasize the importance of education on sexual violence.

May 11 will feature a “talking to the kids about consent” event from 6:30 to 8pm. The workshop will include discussion on how to educate children on consent and boundaries.

On May 18, from 7 to 8:30pm, there will be a “responding to disclosures of sexual violence” workshop.

This is for service providers, or anyone wanting to learn how to best support  sexual violence survivors focusing on harm reduction.

A session on May 20 from 6:30 to 8pm will feature bystander intervention training.  This will provide basic training on bystander intervention, developing skills to recognize and intervene in cases of sexual violence.

“There is a role that everyone can play to prevent sexual violence,” said Williams.

Expected turnout is approximately 50 people per event and “the community has been really responsive,” said Williams.
