GUELPH – Lorraine Roy, whose work has been featured in collections worldwide, brings her artistic vision of ecological vitality to the Arboretum Centre (250 Arboretum Rd) on Oct. 8, at 7:30pm in Guelph.

Having developed a unique sewing style that “paints” with fabric, Roy explores connections between art, science and nature.

Much of her imagery centers around the biology, mythology and cultural impact of trees, classic symbols of humanity’s connection with the natural world.

With slides and original pieces, Roy will present Word Portraits from the Earth, a series of 27 stitched interpretations inspired by Living-language-land.

This collection of chosen words from endangered and minority languages was curated to bring attention to beings and ways of life under threat from climate change.

Roy’s part in this collaborative project was to create word portraits that would engage emotions and light up curiosity about these beautiful, poetic words, many of which have no direct translation to English.

This event is sponsored by the Guelph Seminar, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating meaningful conversations about matters of communal and soulful interest in today’s isolated and searching world, states officials.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $20 or at the Guelph Seminar website at guelphseminar.ca.

Roy’s work can be viewed at her website lroyart.com.
