Fergus Curling Club will continue with bottle drive

FERGUS - The Fergus Curling Club is grateful for the community support as it raises funds for a new floor.

Last year, the club started a committee to raise money for a new floor and refrigeration system.

The current floor was installed in the 1950s and requires upgrades to improve the quality of ice for curlers and reduce operating fees and energy consumption.

Last spring, the committee introduced a bottle drive, pop can, and aluminum recycling fundraiser (ABCs for FCC).

There has been great support for this initiative from both members and the public, raising over $70,000 towards the $500,000 multi-year goal.

“The committee would like to thank Bellamy Construction for providing containers to collect and store donations.,” officials state in a press release.

The quest continues, however, and so the club has issued a community challenge.

“The Fergus Curling Club is challenging any/all local group, teams or clubs to see who can collect the most crushed pop cans,” officials state.

Register via email at abcs4fcc@gmail.com or in person at the bottle drive at the Fergus Curling Club on June 23.

Then each month from June to September, bring your group’s collection to the monthly bottle drive for weigh ins.

On Oct. 9 the club will host all groups for a final weigh in then calculate and announce the winner.

The team/group/club that collects the most will win $500 for their group!

Even if you don’t want to participate in the challenge, feel free to bring aluminum cans to the curling club on bottle drive dates:

- June 23, 2 to 4pm;

- July 17, 6 to 8pm;

- Aug. 14, 6 to 8pm; and

- Sept. 11, 6 to 8pm.

The Fergus Curling Club offers a variety of activities for many groups within the community.

Curling leagues include seniors, juniors, Little Rocks, the Legion, the Lions, the Rotary Club and many others.

New members are always welcome.
