Fire at manufacturing centre causes $20,000 in damage

MOUNT FOREST - A fire at the automotive manufacturing plant Dana Inc. caused about $20,000 in damage.

Wellington North Fire Chief Dave Guilbault said the department was called to 205 Industrial Road in Mount Forest at about 6:17am on May 9.

“There is minimal fire damage; there was smoke damage throughout,” said Guilbault.

He explained the fire started in a cardboard compactor at the plant and smoke quickly spread into the manufacturing area of the plant.

“Because of the heat the sprinkler system did its job, it activated and there is water damage as well,” he added.

However the cause of the fire is still unknown.

“We are treating it as accidental. We just don’t know the exact cause,” Guilbault said.

In total 20 firefighters responded to the call from the Arthur, Mount Forest and West Grey stations.

An aerial ladder was supplied from the West Grey station.

No injuries were sustained. When Guilbault spoke to the Advertiser firefighters had been sent home and the water cleanup was underway.

“There was some water that went into electrical equipment so they are going to have to deal with that,” Guilbault said.
