ROCKWOOD - Sacred Heart Catholic School held a Spring Fun Fair on June 6, the first event in a campaign to raise $50,000 for the first phase of a playground project.

“We want to engage kids and allow them to use their imagination,” said Jill Kron, a parent volunteer with the school’s greening committee.

“We’re working together to bring this vision to life.”

She thanked local businesses for donations to the silent auction, volunteers from the Guelph-Eramosa fire department for showing off their equipment and the Rockwood Lions and food vendors for their donations.

There were also activities such as the funky flamingo ring toss and tug of war.

Each class was consulted about the playground, and kids drew maps of what they would like to include.

The design is still in progress, but the goal is to create areas for different age groups and abilities, using natural elements such as gardens, rocks and trees.

The plan is to have zones in the playground, for activities such as climbing, friendly competitions and quiet reflection. There is also the possibility of outdoor classroom activity.

The committee is hoping to have a series of fundraising events. The school council has already donated $3,000 and will be seeking grants, sponsorships and other donations to support the project.
