FERGUS – About 30 homes in south Fergus are without natural gas after a line was damaged on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were notified of a gas leak on Millburn Boulevard, near the Burnside/Roberston intersection, at about 12:44pm on June 14.

OPP spokesperson Jacob Unger said "some residences" were evacuated by the fire department.

Millburn Boulevard was closed for several hours between Scotland and McTavish streets.

"A crew on scene was doing some directional boring and struck an underground gas line," Centre Wellington Fire Chief Tom Mulvey told the Advertiser on the scene.

"We were called immediately, so all we've done is monitor conditions and the houses in the surrounding area to see if there's any gas getting into the homes.

"Enbridge is currently isolating the problem."

Enbridge spokesperson Andrea Stass said a two-inch plastic pipeline was damaged during "third-party excavation occurring in the area related to communications cable upgrades."

She said gas service to about 30 houses "will be temporarily interrupted" and if the company can complete repairs on Wednesday, it will be restored that evening "to those homes where we can gain entry to restart the gas appliances."

"Once repairs are completed we will work to restore service as quickly and safely as possible," Stass stated.
