EVERTON - The first grass fire of the season kept Guelph-Eramosa firefighters busy for two hours on March 27.

About 10 acres of unused land near Everton was burned, said deputy chief Jim Petrik.

“We encourage the public to hold off on outdoor burning,” said Petrik.

There is no official burn ban, but Petrik said the risk of a fire will be higher until new growth is well-established in the fields.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and damage was considered minimal.

Two trucks from the Town of Erin responded to assist, with crews initially dousing flames that were creeping towards residences.

Guelph-Eramosa firefighters made use of their all-terrain vehicle, which has a 100-gallon water tank.
