BRUCEDALE  – Guelph/Eramosa council has approved changes to the township’s public notice bylaw.

The changes allowed staff to make adjustments to the bylaw and “flesh it out” before transitioning it to official township policy.

Councillor Corey Woods questioned a section of the bylaw concerning the closure and renaming of roads.

The updated bylaw states that no public meeting is required for the permanent closure of a highway, the permanent altering of a highway or the renaming of a highway.

“If we were to change the name of somebody’s road it would be such an upheaval of everybody’s lives on that road, I think it would warrant a public meeting,” said Woods.

“I think even this council would choose, even if the policy says no public meeting, I think we would chose to have a public meeting.”

Tutt assured council the policy merely outlines the basic legal requirements under the Municipal Act, and consultations and public meetings can still happen at council’s discretion.

Council voted in favour of the revisions and to approve a policy at a later meeting.
