GUELPH – Owen Pavan didn’t wake up on June 16 thinking he’d be a new car richer, but that’s exactly what happened when he took his shot on hole 17 at Cutten Fields and sunk a hole-in-one at the United Way’s Golf United tournament.

“It still hasn’t sunk in. I’ve been on cloud nine all week,” said Pavan.

“If it hadn’t been for the video footage, I wouldn’t be able to recall much of that moment because I sort of blacked out. I’ve played that hole so many times before and my ball usually goes in the water!

“The moment of celebration will be a memory that lasts forever and the new car is just icing on the cake.”

Hole 17 was sponsored by Barry Cullen Chevrolet and promised a new car to the first golfer that could sink their first shot. After 10 years of running the tournament with a hole-in-one opportunity, United Way has never seen someone find success.

“It was such an exciting moment – no one could actually believe it,” said Glenna Banda, executive director of United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin.

“As golfers continued to come to the hole after Owen had won and we told them the car was gone, everyone was in shock. It certainly made it an unforgettable day!”

The tournament had 104 golfers participating and raised funds to support over 51 local programs funded by United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin.
