Highland Old Guys rugby team battles hard in Burlington

FERGUS – The Highland Old Guys (HOGS) rugby squad made the trek to Burlington on Aug. 17 for a match against the Niagara Old Boys (NOBS), representing Fergus in their distinctive green and white jerseys.

The 35-plus rugby squad, which plays touch rugby sessions at Victoria Park in Fergus on Tuesday nights, scheduled monthly games against other veteran clubs in the area.

“What unfolded was a hard-fought battle that showcased the heart and determination that defines Highland rugby,” HOGS officials stated.

“Despite putting everything on the line, the HOGS fell just short in a thrilling contest, with the NOBS edging them 25-20 in what proved to be an entertaining match for all involved.”

“It’s awesome to be a part of such a great community, whether on the field giving our all or off the field donating to the food bank, we got a great group here in Fergus and I’m proud to be a part of it,” said HOGS fullback Jason Hunt reflecting on what makes the team special.

Hunt said the action on the pitch was followed by “one of rugby’s most cherished traditions – the post-match beer-up.”

For Hunt and his teammates, the day represented everything positive about the club – competitive rugby, community spirit, and lasting friendships forged both on and off the field.

The HOGS continue to welcome new members to their ranks.
