MAPLETON – Council here presented a $250 athletic bursary cheque to Woolwich Wildcats U13 player Ty Martin on June 11.

The bursary is meant to encourage youth in Mapleton Township to “expand their life experiences through sport and to offset the cost of competing at the provincial, national, or international level,” according to the township’s website.

Martin’s team had a successful 2023-24 season.

The Woolwhich Wildcats U13 ‘A’ team, coached by Dave Weiss, won the Ontario Minor Hockey Association Championship in Whitby in April.

It won all five games in the tournament, beating the Norfolk Knights 3-1 in the finals.

At the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) Championships in Cochrane three weeks later, the team placed second, after the Brantford 99ers.

The OHF Championships included “the six best teams in Ontario, all trying to win,” Martin said.
