Local dog guide walk among nation's top 10
Participants in last Sundays’ Lions Foundation of Canada Purina Walk for Dog Guides can take pride in knowing they are definitely doing their share for the cause.
Fergus Lions Club member and event co-chair Ben Collings said a dog guide walk has been held in Fergus for close to three decades and “they’re just getting more successful every year.”
“We’re probably raising about $15,000 here today,” said Collings prior to the May 29 event. “Last year we almost made $17,000.”
He added, “We were tenth in Canada; the small, little town of Fergus and Marsville - because Marsville comes in with us - we were tenth in Canada city-wise. We were thrilled.”
Collings said the national goal this year was to raise $1.5 million.
“It costs a lot of money to raise these dogs – they’re $25,000 each on average,” he pointed out.
About 40 walkers participated in the event, which involved a two-kilometre walk starting from Forfar Park.
Final totals from Sunday’s walk are not expected to be tallied for a couple of weeks, organizers said.
