ELORA – More than 10,000 people are expected to pack downtown Elora for the return of the town’s “longest barbecue” on July 29.

The annual gathering of local restaurants and foodies celebrates Canadian-inspired dishes ahead of Food Day Canada, which this year falls on Aug. 2.

Last year’s Elora’s Longest BBQ event attracted at least 7,500 attendees, states a press release.

At least 20 restaurants, along with breweries and distilleries and other vendors, are expected be in attendance next week.

Food Day Canada was started by late local culinary legend Anita Stewart to recognize and celebrate Canadian cuisine and the many people behind it.

The Elora resident spent a lifetime advocating for Canadian food and brought people together in kitchens across the nation with her many cookbooks.

“As the official kick-off event, Elora’s Longest BBQ honours her legacy by spotlighting community, collaboration and Canadian culinary pride,” says the press release.

“Elora’s Longest BBQ will be a feast for the senses, and the community spirit,” said Jeff Stewart Anita’s son and Food Day Canada executive director.

“It’s about celebrating Canadian ingredients, the people who grow, harvest and prepare them, and the joy of gathering at a shared table.”

The event is set for July 29 from 4 to 9pm with a rain date of July 30.

Admission is free, but food and beverage tickets need to be purchased online or on-site.

Proceeds support Food Day Canada and its mandate to promote and champion Canadian food, farmers, and culinary excellence.
