GUELPH/ERAMOSA – After what was initially supposed to be a month-long operation, the construction for Main Street South (Highway 7) in Rockwood is to be completed this week.

The construction, which began early August, was originally slated to be completed Sept. 3 but was extended to Sept. 24 after some unexpected delays surfaced during reconstruction.

This included ongoing equipment shortages from the pandemic affecting supply chain issues and the township’s inability to obtain certain parts.

In a news release on the township’s website, the Township of Guelph/Eramosa announced although the rain has caused a slight delay, the road repair and watermain replacement on Main Street South between Harris and Frederick Street will be opening to traffic once again this week.

“We apologize for the delay in completion. There were several unforeseen delays and multiple buried surprises encountered during this project as is often the case when dealing with old infrastructure,” the Sept. 23 news release from the township stated.

“This project has enabled the township to renew a significant portion of watermain and valves within the provincial highway and add additional valves to aid in system operation and isolation ability during any future breaks.”

The release states following road paving, sidewalk and boulevard restoration will take place this week, completing the final work on the road.
