Mayor expresses support for Alberta fire victims

Mayor Neil Driscoll opened the May 10 meeting of Mapleton council with thoughts for the thousands of people displaced by the wildfire that forced the evacuation of the entire community of Fort McMurray, Alberta.

“It reminds us how fortunate we are here to have what we have,” said Driscoll, who noted he was pleased to see so many local churches gathering donations for relief efforts.

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario is also gathering donations and Driscoll said he would be donating his per diem from the meeting through the association, which will be matched by the federal government, to the relief effort.
