Memorial planting recognizes Barbara Harris on National Tree Day

CLIFFORD - Family and friends gathered in the Rotary Park here on Sept. 25 to plant a tree in memory of Barbara Harris, recognizing her contribution to the Clifford and District Horticultural Society and the local community.

“Each year in celebration of National Tree Day, we honour a director who has passed away,” noted society president Vic Palmer.

“I am pleased to see so many family and friends. Planted in memory of Barb is a shagbark hickory tree; it’s hearty, can handle the shade, and will grow to 50 or 60 feet tall,” Palmer added.

“Trish and I are relatively new to Clifford only having lived here 10 years, so others knew her far better. Barbara always had a smile, a happy face, bustling to help out. We were made to feel welcome. This tree is a living legacy to her.”

Palmer said Harris donated hundreds of hours between 2007 to 2019 serving on the board; planning, planting, and caring for community gardens; organizing the spring and summer flower shows; finding, introducing and thanking guest speakers; pitching in to Tidy the Town for Earth Day; attending District 7 meetings; participating in garden tours; baking and selling baking for the bake sales; and canvassing for members.

“Barb was described as a sweetheart. She offered suggestions, ideas and words of praise. Her willingness to accept any task was a true blessing to her co-volunteers and the society,” Palmer stated.

Brian Harris thanked everyone for their support, stating, “It is appreciated.”

Brian and his sons Michael and David spread mulch over the base of the tree, then Brian added the sign in memory of Barb.

After chatting and getting a closer look at the tree, the gathering left the park and headed to the Rotary Pavillion Park for a time of reminiscing.
