MAPLETON – The Moorefield Optimists held their annual Fishing Derby at Cosens’ Pond on May 31.

Despite rain, wind and single-digit temperatures, a record-breaking 89 kids, ranging in age from two to 15, bundled up to try their luck at catching a trout and winning a prize.

About 40 trout were caught. Proceeds from the free event go to the club’s community initiatives.

On June 7, there will be an auction at the Moorefield Optimists Hall from 10am to 9pm, with proceeds providing swimming lessons for local youth.
