Mount Forest Queen Street repaving receives financial boost from province

The province has provided a financial boost to help repave a section of Queen Street in Mount Forest this year.

On April 10 Wellington North council shared a letter from transportation minister Steven Del Duca that announced the township will be awarded just over $233,000 for the project.

The section to be repaved is Queen Street from Dublin Street to Main Street.

“Our intent would be to try and tender it when we do the rest of our urban paving tendering and probably proceed in early fall with this project,” said CAO Mike Givens.

He added staff is aware of other stretches that require attention.

Mayor Andy Lennox  said, “We’ve made significant efforts in the past to get the Connecting Link program reinstated, and we haven’t been the beneficiary of that up until now.

“It’s great to finally benefit from that.”

He added the township will continue to struggle for funding.

“We certainly have needs in our community and some other sections of our Connecting Link continue to deteriorate,” he said.

The letter stated the 2017-18 Connecting Links program provides $25 million for community infrastructure projects, which will increase to $30 million for 2018-19.

“It’s nice that the province is supporting us,” said councillor Steve McCabe.
