Nick Spaling with Team Canada at Spengler Cup

Drayton native Nick Spaling is among 23 members of Team Canada participating in the 2016 Spengler Cup hockey tournament in Davos, Switzerland.

The tournament, which kicked off on boxing day and runs until Dec. 31, is one of the oldest invitational hockey tournaments in the world.

The event is hosted by the Swiss team HC Davos and features primarily European club teams.

Team Canada, which has won the tournament 13 times since 1984, is made up of Canadian professionals playing for various European teams.

Spaling, 28, collected 52 goals and 124 points playing in 437 career NHL games over seven seasons with teams in Nashville, Pittsburgh, Toronto and San Jose.

In August, he signed a one-year contract with Geneve-Servette HC of the Swiss-A league. In 26 games so far this season he has seven goals and nine assists.

Canada dropped its opening game on Dec. 26 to Dinamo Minsk by a 7-4 count. The team then defeated host HC Davos 4-3 on Dec. 27.

All games, including the championship contest on Dec. 31, are being broadcast on TSN.
