NIEUWLAND, Arend

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our cherished husband, father, and grandfather, Arend Nieuwland, at the age of 77. Arend, born in the Netherlands in 1946 to the late Cornelis Nieuwland and Lena Koningswoud, was a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto and the University of Guelph. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to art, working as an artist and serving as the Director of the Arts Program at the Guelph Correctional Centre for 26 years. He was also one of the directing board members of the Canadian Prison Arts Program. Arend often expressed that “Art is an international language, like laughter and love.” Arend’s passion for both physical and philosophical inquiry enriched his life and inspired those around him. His sculptures and paintings are displayed in galleries and private collections both nationally and internationally. Arend is survived by his wife, Janny (nee Van Der Heijden), his sons Justin (Miranda), Roben (Kelly), and Jordan (Liz), as well as his grandchildren Chase, West, and Aria. He is also survived by his brother Bill and sister-in-law, Trudie Nieuwland, and by Hans and Nelly Van der Mass and their family from the Netherlands. Additionally, he is survived by many nephews and nieces. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Arend’s life will be held on Sunday, May 5th, from 1-3pm at Mighton Funeral Home in Hanover. To pay tribute to Arend’s legacy, a 10ft bronze sculpture will be erected in Guelph. A Non-Profit donation portal will be setup to honour Arend’s project, or the charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.mightonfuneral.ca
