PALMERSTON – Norwell District Secondary School (NDSS) held a Relay for Life event, raising $13,393 for the Canadian Cancer Society (CSS), and surpassing its goal of $10,000.

Over the years the school  had raised $290,287 for CSS prior to the June 14 event this year. Event organizer and teacher Betty Douglas explained the goal was to reach $300,000, which they have now surpassed.

The school had been limited in what events they could hold during the pandemic. Relay For Life was one of the first events back after a long hiatus, said Douglas. They got the go ahead to run it in early spring.

“I think it’s important for students to be socially responsible,” said Douglas on why the relay is being brought back. She added cancer affects everyone.

For time’s sake, the event, organized by a small committee consisting of Douglas and five students, was held in a different format than past years.

Relay for Life is typically an overnight affair, with a team member having to walk the track at all times, explained Douglas.

This year it ran during the day, with students walking a lap of the track during the opening ceremony. Continuing the walk was encouraged, but not mandatory. Students could participate in activities and eat provided food.

“It’s really a party with a purpose,” said Douglas.

The event featured games, dodgeball, teacher pie-in-the face and Zumba, among other activities

For opening ceremonies the school brought on stage a faculty member who has beat cancer, who led students for the first lap of the track.

Homeroom classes competed against each other to raise money leading up to the event, with students receiving donation links that they could share with friends and family.
