OPP fundraise for boy with leukemia

Wellington County OPP officers had a friendly game of hockey against Erin District High School students in order to raise money for a local boy with leukemia.

Five-year-old Damion Lajoie of Ospringe dropped the puck at the game on March 9 at Centre 2000 in Erin.

His parents, Jo-Anne Carney and Paul Lajoie, noticed Damion would complain about headaches and sore legs and in November 2016, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The family spent Christmas at a Ronald McDonald house while Damion was treated at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.

“His attitude has never really broken,” said Paul, adding Damion has remained positive.

While Damion is back home, he is still undergoing treatment, which is expected to continue for another three years.

EDHS students could donate $2 to watch the game in order to raise funds in Damion’s name for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

In addition to cash donations, the Ronald McDonald House is looking for non-perishable food items, kitchen supplies (Ziploc bags, foil, saran wrap) and toiletries.

So far, efforts have raised $40,000 for the family to help cover costs.

Erin councillor Jeff Duncan, who helped drop the puck, said council would be donating $150 out of its “good guys” fund.

“It’s been pretty incredible,” said Carney of the community’s support.
