PALMERSTON – A small but enthusiastic group gathered at the Palmerston Legion on Oct. 15 to celebrate a $100,800 capital grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation for much-needed updates to the building.

A new roof, washrooms and electrical updates were completed on Sept. 21.

Perth-Wellington MPP Matthew Rae was on hand to meet with the volunteers who worked to obtain the grant.

“Congratulations to the Palmerston Legion on completing these important upgrades,” said Rae. “Our Legions are valued institutions in our rural communities.”

On hand were both Minto Mayor George Bridge and acclaimed mayoral candidate Dave Turton.

“I’ve been to so many great functions in this building,” said Bridge.

“It’s really nice to see the building in better shape, and to see more young people involved.”

Turton congratulated the Legion and said Minto council “will always support our Legions. This is where people come to meet.”

Palmerston Legion president Allan Toner thanked the eight volunteers who helped with “hours and hours” of paperwork.

“I guess we must have done it right because we got the grant,” he said.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation is an agency of the Government of Ontario that provides the opportunity for organizations to secure a range of grants.

Capital grants are supplied to allow improvements to community buildings and spaces.
