Police beat: OPP investigating Dec. 31 crash that claimed life of teen

CENTRE WELLINGTON – A local teen is dead following a two-vehicle crash north of Inverhaugh on New Year’s Eve.

Wellington County OPP officials say emergency crews responded to a collision between a car and minivan, on Wellington Road 21 near 4th Line East in Centre Wellington, just after 7am on Dec. 31.

The two lone drivers were taken to a local hospital, where one was pronounced dead, an OPP news release stated.

The second driver was later airlifted to a Hamilton hospital for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Police have not released the name of the teen who died, but said the 18-year-old is a resident of Centre Wellington. Family friends later identified him as Nicholas Law.

The road was closed between Wellington Road 7 and Sideroad 4 while police investigated the cause of the collision.

Police have not yet said what may have caused the crash.

Motorcycle stolen

HARRISTON – An Ayton man has been charged in connection with a vehicle theft here last week.

Wellington County OPP officials say police were on patrol in Harriston on Dec. 31 at about 9:30am when they were called about a stolen motorcycle.

Officers “located the suspect, placing them into custody and recovering the stolen vehicle,” police stated in a Jan. 1 press release.

Codie Bloom, 32, of Ayton, was charged with theft of a vehicle and is to appear in Guelph court on Feb. 2.

Partner violence

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police continue to lay intimate partner violence charges across the county.

Those arrested include:

– a 33-year-old man from Fergus, who was charged with assault in relation to an incident in Fergus on Dec. 30;

– a 25-year-old man from Guelph/Eramosa, charged with assault in relation to an incident in Guelph/Eramosa on Jan. 1; and

– a 40-year-old man from Brantford, charged with assault in relation to an incident in Erin on Jan. 4.

The accused individuals are to appear in Guelph court at a later date.
