Policy for supporting students with prevalent medical conditions released for public consultation
GUELPH – The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) is updating its policy for students with medical conditions including asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes and epilepsy.
The board released an updated policy draft for public consultation on Sept. 23.
Updates to the policy include changing the name from “Students with Life-Threatening Medical Conditions” to “Supporting Students with Prevalent Medical Conditions.”
It also includes a revised policy statement that broadens the scope of medical conditions covered by the policy and notes necessary staff training and a collaborative approach.
A definitions section has been added to the policy, as have details outlining enhanced communications and training and the roles and responsibilities of parents/guardians, students and school staff.
According to the review plan for the policy, it aims to help parents feel confident their child is safe and has equal opportunities to others, encourage collaboration between students, parents, school staff and health care professionals, and ensure staff are able to minimize risks, recognize signs and symptoms, and respond appropriately to medical incidents.

Feedback will be received until 4pm on Oct. 23.
The board is set to consider and potentially approve the policy during its Dec. 16 meeting.
