Public health agency warns of salmonella outbreak

OTTAWA  – The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has issued a public health notice after a recent outbreak of salmonella linked to various deli products.

The health notice, which was published July 19, stated a total of 87 individuals are affected thus far: one in British Columbia, 68 in Alberta, one in Manitoba and 17 in Ontario.

The data also reveals nine people have been hospitalized.

Recalls have been issued for various salami and cacciatore products from the following brands.

– Bona;

– Cosmo’s Smoked Meats;

– Imperial Meats;

– Longos;

– Luc’s European Meats Cheese and Eats;

– Marini Salumi;

– Naturissimo;

– P&E Foods;

– Rea;

– Speziale Fine Foods;

– Superior Meats;

– T.J. Meats; and

– Vince’s Cured Meats Corp.

These products were distributed to various grocery stores, delis, specialty cafes and butchers.

PHAC cautions those buying prepared foods such as sandwiches, as these products may contain the above products.

Salmonellosis (salmonella) is a food-borne bacterial illness that can affect anyone exposed to a contaminated food product.

People who are infected with the salmonella bacteria can spread it to other people several days to several weeks after they have become infected.
