ELORA – Salem Public School students in Tessa Heffernan’s kindergarten class got a behind-the-scenes look at preparing treats at the Geddes Street Market on Oct. 29. It was one of several class trips enabled by a $500 experiential learning grant from the province.

Heffernan helps students work together to make chocolate chip cookies.
Bakery worker Karter Patterson, once a student in Heffernan’s kindergarten class, said the visit going so smoothly was a testament to Heffernan, but the teacher noted “The bakers were so prepared and helpful which was key in the smoothness.” The students here, from left, are Nixon Cordes, Maxine DeBoer and Evelyn Walpole. Businesses interested in inviting the kindergarten students to their kitchens, or visiting the school to connect learning and local food, can email Heffernan at theffernan@ugcloud.ca.Photos by Robin George
