Scarborough man charged with human trafficking

PALMERSTON – Police have charged a Scarborough man with close to a dozen human trafficking and assault charges in relation to an incident here this summer.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers responded to "a disturbance" in Palmerston on July 10.

"At that time officers entered into an intimate partner violence investigation as well as a human trafficking investigation," police stated in a Nov. 13 press release.

Police say a 52-year-old man from Scarborough was arrested on Nov. 2 and charged with:

  • trafficking in person(s);
  • receiving material benefit for trafficking a person;
  • receiving a financial or material benefit from commission of the purchasing offence;
  • procuring a person to provide sexual services;
  • procuring a person to provide sexual services by exercising control;
  • advertising sexual services for consideration;
  • sexual assault;
  • forcible confinement;
  • spousal assault; and
  • two counts of assault causing bodily harm (choke, suffocate or strangle).

Police did not provide the name of the accused in order to protect the identity of the victim.

The accused is to appear in Guelph court on Nov. 15.
