ROCKWOOD – The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called to investigate the death of a man who was held in custody at the Rockwood OPP station.

According to an SIU press release, the man, 36, was arrested in Arthur by OPP officers at 8:30pm on July 9, and was held in a cell at the North Wellington Operations Centre in Teviotdale.

He was then transferred to the South Wellington Operations Centre in Rockwood that same night.

“In the morning of July 10, the man was observed to be in medical distress,” the press release states.

“First aid was administered, and Emergency Medical Services transported the man to a hospital in Guelph.”

The man died in hospital at 11:20am on July 10.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator from the SIU have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for Friday.

When contacted by the Advertiser, staff at the Rockwood station said they cannot speak about the incident while SIU is investigating.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
