Skating trail built at Wallace Cumming Park
Ice makers - Dave Geddes, Walter Grose and Brent Geddes warm up with coffee while filling the water tank to flood the skating trail in Alma. Submitted photo

ALMA – Out-door skating is a popular winter activity and one of the few allowable under  COVID-19 pandemic restrictions this winter.

Dave Geddes of Alma  heard about provincial parks setting up skating trails up north and decided it might be fun to offer such an experience locally. The Alma Optimists and community volunteers maintain the outdoor rink at the Optimist’s Park in the village.

Wallace Cumming Park in Alma has tree-lined walking trails so that offered the perfect location to set up a skating trail. The challenge was how to flood the trail.

Walter and Nick Grose of Husky Farm Equipment helped Geddes rig up a watering unit on a trailer. Once the temperature forecast was for a few days of decently cold weather, Geddes borrowed a small tractor, filled the watering tank  and got to work.

Geddes and his son Brent took turns driving the tractor through the tree lined trail and back to the Husky shop to re-fill the watering unit.

After many trips back and forth the trail was set up in time to give families an  outdoor activity to enjoy together on the weekend of March 6 and 7.
