HARRISTON – A massive sports-themed mural on a downtown building here will be the Town of Minto’s latest public art project.

On April 4 town council approved a contract for the project with artist Blaze Wiradharma and Cox Sanitation building owners Rick and Joan Fisk.

"This is an exciting project that we've been working for a couple of years towards, again partnering with Blaze, who's done a lot of the graffiti murals in our communities,” director of economic and community development Belinda Wick-Graham told council.

"He's amazing and people love his work.

This is a sports-themed mural … We've had a lot of input from a variety of stakeholders to get this to the final design."

Wick-Graham noted the new mural will be larger than past murals created by Wiradharma in Harriston, Palmerston and Clifford.

“It is significant size. It's 50 feet long and 10 feet high,” she explained.

"And because of that, it was a more expensive mural than what we typically undertake, which is why it has been (funded) over two years.”

She noted some funds from the Minto Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament will also be used for the project.

The total cost is for the mural is $12,500, with funding provided from the town’s 2022 and 2023 capital budgets.

Wick-Graham said work on the project is expected to begin early in May.

“It’s a beautiful mural,” said Mayor Dave Turton of the concept design presented at the meeting.
